Unlike a wing, a spoiler is usually used to decrease lift, in other words it spoils the airflow over the wing. The terms are not interchangeable. On most cars, the passenger cabin acts like a wing and creates positive lift. At high speeds this can make the rear of the car lose traction, as Audi found out with its TT. A spoiler installed at the back disrupts the airflow over the wing and makes it lose lift. Commonly used on aircraft.
